Self-archiving in an open access repository is a fairly quick and simple process that does not require special technical competences.

The basic steps in self-archiving are:

  1. The author or the proxy self-archiving service inputs the metadata through a user-friendly interface and attaches the relevant object.

  2. The author grants to the institution the right to use and disseminate the object.

  3. The author's right to deposit an object into the institutional repository is checked

  4. A final check and correction of the object's metadata is carried out

  5. The object's format is checked for compliance

  6. During any one of the aforementioned checks an object may be rejected and deleted, or returned to the author for correction and re-submission. Once steps one to five have been successfully completed/verified, the object is accepted and submitted to the repository.

  7. The accepted object is given an identical code and URL address in order to be continuously accessible.
