Repository of the National Ph.D. Theses Archive

Share |
According to article 70, paragraph 15 of L. 1566/1985 the National Documentation Centre is the designated institution to develop and maintain the National Hellenic Ph.D. Theses Archive. EKT centrally collects Ph.D. Theses carried out in Greek higher education institutions and Ph.D. Theses carried out by Greeks abroad, on provision that the latter have been accredited by the National Academic Recognition Information Centre, the Hellenic organization that certifies the equivalency of foreign degrees to Greek ones. University Departments are responsible to provide the data for the Ph.D. Theses to EKT, along with a copy of the dissertation in print and electronic form.

The National Ph.D. Theses Archive database comprises (January 2010) more than 18.000 entries, and approximately 13.550 of them are accompanied by the full text. The Archive allows a user to search in various ways, such as with keyword(s), free text, author, title etc. Further, it allows access to the full text of any thesis, where possible, in digital form through a link. EKT also preserves the print copies of the theses.

In view of preserving this scholarly output and making it accessible to the research and wider community, and in order to promote the Greek Ph.D. Theses, EKT has undertaken the migration of this archive into a repository infrastructure. At the same time, a thesis self-archiving service is being implemented. Further, EKT participates in the international project DART-Europe, a collaboration between libraries and other organizations aiming at improving access to Ph.D. theses carried out in European countries. Upon completion of the work of migrating the thesis database to a repository environment EKT's repository will be connected to the DART-Europe repository, so that Greek Ph.D. theses can also be accessible from that site.
