New RIN report on access to research information

A new report was released in December by the Research Information Network (U.K.) on "Overcoming barriers: access to research information content". The report is based on the findings of five studies on this topic. It investigates the nature and scale of key restrictions on access to information resources of importance to researchers, as well as their impact and ways in which they might be alleviated or overcome.

According to the report, researchers encounter difficulties in accessing research information, and this has an impact on their research. Researchers generally do not have trouble locating research information, particularly if this exists in electronic form. However, they do not always have access to this content. Access is a multi-faceted issue that depends, among other things, on whether a source is available in electronic form, on the terms of the license for online use, and whether the latter restricts access for non-members of institutions. Researchers who participated in the relevant surveys reported disappointment at not being able to have immediate access to research content, and indicated that this slows their progress, hinders collaborative work and may affect the quality and integrity of the work produced.

Among its recommendations for actions that will alleviate obstacles to access to research content RIN emphasizes the significance of enabling improved discovery and access and highlights building on open access models as a means to improve accessibility to research content.
