The 19th-23rd of October 2009 marks the first worldwide Open Access week. This week offers the opportunity to promote the visibility and awareness of Open Access to scientific information. The Open Access week is building on the enthusiasm generated by the open access days which were organized in 2007 and 2008.

The week is organized by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition), PLoS (The Public Library of Science), Students for FreeCulture, OASIS (the Open Access Scholarly Information Sourcebook); Open Access Directory (OAD) and eIFL.net (Electronic Information for Libraries).
