Users & Benefits

One of the main principles of the Open Access Movement is that research literature must remain accessible to everyone at no charge. Open Access delivers significant benefits to all its constituent stakeholders including researchers, academics, publishers and society at large. More precisely OA has benefits for:
Αuthors
  • OA offers increased visibility and readership as it gives access to a larger worldwide audience.
  • It disseminates the research findings.
  • It maximizes the research impact. (According to studies, research articles that have been self-archived are cited more often than those that have not.)
  • The research cycle is enhanced and accelerated - the delay between acceptance and publication is shortened.
  • Authors become the copyright holders by retaining the rights they want.
  • Authors receive proper acknowledgement when their work is used.
  • Their work is visible to every search and retrieval tool.
  • It helps the researchers' career as they gain recognition.
Readers
  • Price barriers and restrictions are removed.
  • Copyright limitations are removed because the author gives advance permission for the wide use of the complete publication.
  • Research results can be reused.
  • OA assists readers in their research. It makes research more efficient by developing tools for full-text searches.
Publishers
  • Receive proper acknowledgement and citation as the journal of first publication.
  • Although reluctant to move to OA, some commercial publishers benefit from applying OA publishing models.
  • Publishers are still needed to ensure quality of publications and to meet the expectations of authors and readers.
  • OA offers small publishers a viable, practical and sustainable publishing model.
  • It is an effective way for new publishers to enter the publishing market and for those already existing to expand into new market segments (i.e. Humanities).
Institutions & Libraries
  • It removes price and permission barriers.
  • The libraries' budget can be used to support research rather than to pay the journal subscriptions.
  • They can ensure long-term access and preservation of the scientific content.
  • OA enforces the authority and image of the institution by publishing its scientific output.
Governments & funding agencies
  • Increase ROI (return of investment) by making publicly funded research freely available to anyone interested.
  • They promote democracy by helping the sharing of knowledge.
  • They accelerate the research output and ensure the greatest possible impact of research.
Public
  • OA increases the utility of scientific knowledge by making research results available to anybody anywhere in the world.
  • Members of the public can gain access to research for which they have already paid through their taxes.
  • It speeds research progress, productivity and everyone benefits from quicker discoveries.
  • Users in developing countries can gain access to scientific literature that they otherwise could not have, for financial reasons.
  • It extends the reach of scientific results from the pure scholar community to the wider public.
